Spinifex Brewing Co has been chosen as the lead Australian trial partner for PropaGate, a world-first circular brewing initiative that transforms brewery wastewater and organic by-products into reusable water, algae biomass, soil enhancers and other high-value materials.

The pilot brings together Hydroleap (Singapore), Murdoch University, C-Wise, Beanstalk and PropaGate to build a fully integrated, chemical-free sustainability system at Spinifex’s production site.

A Breakthrough in Brewery Wastewater Treatment

Hydroleap’s electrochemical technology (electrocoagulation + electro oxidation) reduces COD, BOD, solids, oils, grease, pathogens and heavy metals — delivering:

  • 30–40% reduction in wastewater requiring disposal
  • 30–50% CO₂ reduction

The system produces a recyclable water stream suitable for non-potable brewery use.

Hydroleap is a pioneering greentech company revolutionizing the water treatment industry through next generation electrochemical technology.

Turning Waste Into High-Value Products

The remaining solids become input for Murdoch University and C-Wise’s biological conversion program, producing algae biomass, probiotics, soil enhancers and other circular-economy materials. This diverts brewing by-products from landfill and creates new commercial pathways.

Beanstalk Driving Commercialisation and Scale

Beanstalk supports the project with commercial modelling, R&D integration, grant alignment and scalability planning, ensuring the system becomes a commercially viable long-term solution for WA’s beverage industry.

A First for Western Australia

Spinifex HR, Marketing & Strategic Operations Lead said the program places the brewery ‘at the forefront of clean, circular production in WA, with real environmental impact, operating cost savings and a sustainability platform that strengthens our future expansion.’

Next Steps

Engineering design, wastewater analysis and bioprocessing trials are underway, with plans to scale the system across Spinifex’s wider production footprint as part of the company’s Vision ’30 growth strategy.

This has potential to change the brewing industry’s circular economy ten fold. And Spinifex is at the helm of this Australian first pilot, setting the future of sustainability in Australia.
