Spinifex Brewing Co is thrilled to announce its participation in the Value Adding to Brewery Spent Grain project, a pioneering initiative supported by the Cook Government to transform brewing by-products into high-value food and fibre products.
The $1.24 million collaboration, backed by a $660,000 investment from the WA State Government, brings together leading research institutions and industry partners to unlock new market opportunities for Western Australia’s craft brewing sector. The project aims to repurpose brewer’s spent grain (BSG)—a nutrient-rich by-product of beer production—into innovative products such as ready-to-eat foods, nutraceuticals, and plant-based leather.
Adam Barnard, Managing Director of Spinifex Brewing Co, said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to be part of this forward-thinking initiative. At Spinifex Brewing Co, sustainability and innovation are at the heart of everything we do, and this project aligns perfectly with our mission to create world-class products that are proudly Made in WA.
Collaborating with the WA Government, ChemCentre, Curtin University, and other passionate partners gives us a unique opportunity to turn what was once considered waste into something truly valuable—for our industry, our environment, and our community.”
Spinifex Brewing Co has long championed Indigenous engagement, local sourcing, and environmental responsibility. This new venture further strengthens its commitment to driving positive change across the brewing and food sectors.
The project is being delivered in partnership with the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre, with contributions from the WA Brewers Association, Nanollose, Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery, and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
