Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach Launches Limited Edition Beer in Support of Turtle Conservation

Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach is taking a bold step towards conservation this summer with the launch of a new draught beer!

The Flatback Draught (4.2% ABV) is a limited-edition beer that is a nod to our new partnership with turtle monitoring champions, WeSpotTurtles.org; a West Australian-based app that is revolutionizing sea turtle conservation.

This new draught is a clear, golden amber lager with a balanced blend of malt sweetness and subtle hop bitterness, offering a smooth, crisp, and refreshing finish that promises to do more than just satisfy that summer thirst, in fact 10% of the proceeds from the Flatback Draught will be directed to the We Spot Turtles initiative.

We Spot Turtles empowers communities to play an active role in protecting endangered sea turtle species, many of which are classified as endangered, critically endangered, or “data deficient.” Western Australia’s Flatback turtle falls into the latter category. Due to insufficient data on their population, their crucial conservation needs are often overlooked, leaving them vulnerable to decline.

We Spot Turtles uses AI-powered photo recognition technology to help solve this issue, identifying individual turtles based on their unique facial scales and shell patterns. Much like a human fingerprint, these patterns allow users to track and monitor turtles across the globe, helping to build a rich database of sightings that supports ongoing research and conservation efforts.

This new draught beer pays tribute to the Flatback turtle and aligns perfectly with the turtle nesting and hatching periods at Cable Beach, running from October 28th 2024 to February 28th 2025. The beer is part of a larger mission to raise awareness and secure funding for vital sea turtle research. According to Caitie McKeown, the Co-founder and Director of We Spot Turtles,
