All works of art tell a unique story, and every relocation unveils a new chapter in the life of the artwork. Such is the case with “Coco the Camel”. Uniquely crafted from recycled materials by Wheatbelt Artist Jordan Spriggs, Coco stands at 2.5m tall and weighs over half a tonne, so moving her is no small task! Recently, Coco embarked on a journey from her short-term residence at the Broome Airport to her new home at Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach.

Coco has quickly become a well-loved landmark by both tourists and locals of Broome. Inspired by the Dromedary Camels that make the trip to Cable Beach every day to provide tourists with a remarkable memory of Broome that they will cherish forever. Coco is a tribute to Abdul Latif Casley (June 14, 1943 – June 20, 2021), who walked his family and 8 camels from Katherine in the Northern Territory to Broome in 1981. In 1983, he commenced the first camel rides on Cable Beach.

To this day, Camels still trek along the world-famous-cable beach. We all walk in his footsteps.

Coco’s Plaque

Coco will be installed at the new Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach in the coming weeks as the venue begins to reach the final stages of the fit-out. Coco’s relocation not only marks a new chapter in her artistic journey but also celebrates the spirit of collaboration and appreciation for art in the Broome community.

Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach has not only gained a remarkable piece of art but has also inherited a piece of the town’s history and culture.
