We were absolutely delighted to welcome Paul Nicholls, CEO of ChemCentre WA, and the ChemCentre team including Dr Joel Gummer, Dr Sophie Hancock, Dr John Moursoundidis and Dr Chris May along with Dr Chris Vas General Manager of the Food Innovation Precinct to Spinifex Brewing Co Production facility and the Food Innovation Precinct WA this week! Their visit comes at a pivotal moment, following the WA State Government’s exciting announcement of the Brewery Spent Grain Project—a bold step forward for sustainability and innovation in Western Australia’s brewing industry.
At Spinifex, we’re proud to be a key partner in the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre Project (CRCP), working alongside ChemCentre WA, Curtin University, DPIRD, C-Wise, Gage Roads, and A Little Wild Australia. Together, we’re tackling the challenge of brewers’ spent grain (BSG)—transforming what was once a waste product into high-value resources that benefit agriculture, aquaculture, and even the cosmetics industry.
During the visit, we discussed the pilot project focused on Black Soldier Fly (BSF) bioconversion. This innovative process turns BSG into:
- Frass: a nutrient-rich organic fertiliser for broadacre crops like oats and barley in the WA Wheatbelt
- High-protein larvae: for livestock, aquaculture feed, and pet food
- Bio-oils: with potential applications in cosmetics.

Spinifex Brewing Co CEO Adam Barnard meeting with Paul Nicholls, CEO of ChemCentre WA, alongside Dr Joel Gummer, Dr Sophie Hancock, Dr John Moursoundidis, Dr Chris May, and Dr Chris Vas, General Manager of the Food Innovation Precinct WA.
Thanks to the project, Spinifex enjoys free BSG collection, saving on disposal costs and boosting operational efficiency. More importantly, we’re helping to reduce landfill waste, cut methane emissions, and support a circular economy—demonstrating that sustainability and business success go hand in hand.
We’re grateful to Paul Nicholls and ChemCentre WA for their leadership, partnership, and vision. Their support is instrumental in driving this project forward and positioning WA as a leader in environmentally responsible brewing.
Here’s to a greener, more innovative future—together!
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to pioneer new ways to turn brewery by-products into valuable resources for our community and beyond.
